Class Description
During the Civil War, nearly 13,000 men died as prisoners at Camp Sumter Military Prison commonly known as Andersonville, a site that became infamous even before the Civil War ended. Their burial grounds became Andersonville National Cemetery, where veterans continue to be buried today. This place, where thousands suffered captivity so others could be free, is also home to the National Prisoner of War Museum and serves as a memorial to all American prisoners of war. This ranger-guided virtual program will explore the history of Andersonville Prison from construction in 1864 to its establishment as a Nation Historic Site in 1970 including a discussion on how Park Staff assist visitors with locating the Civil War records of their ancestors and what records we use to determine if a person was help at Andersonville.
