Our aim is to actually write our family stories! We may comment on the stories after they are presented, but we are not “professional” writers seeking to critique our writing. There are other sources for studying writing technique and style. We welcome an individual’s own way of writing about their forebears, and we will comment as we are moved. The group is a great source of discipline to write—the monthly deadline encourages it.
At our November 10 meeting starting at 2 pm on Zoom, we have a special speaker, Bob Larson (also our Education Chair) will show a 2010 video on Boyd & Gwen Johnson on writing your family history and their 2010 book, “Write Now – Tell Your Family Story” and a slide presentation on his biological dad, which is a fascinating story about his dad’s colorful life!
Bob as the previous LCGS president helped to create this group over 15 years ago with Boyd & Gwen Johnson. Bob will discuss their 2010 book on “Write Now! Tell Your Family Story” created by these original founders in collaboration with Bob and several other LCGS members! Boyd explains the 5 myths about writing your family story and Gwen tells about their new concept book to help genealogists start writing their family story using the 5 methods.
Bob briefly explains five different methods from their book on how to tell your family history story! Boyd created almost 50 vignettes in book form on his relatives and ancestors after he and his wife Gwen retired as educators in California and moved to Loveland!
Bob presents two of these methods on his biological dad who served in WWII. The first method is a brief 3 page history (aka vignette) from a larger family history book Bob authored in 2007, “The Coffin-Pierson Legacy.”
The second method in more detail, which is a pictorial slide presentation of his dad’s fascinating military career as an aircraft mechanic and crew chief in Washington D.C., the China Buma India WWII campaign, and beyond. His dad took several hundred photos during his WWII career that Bob brings to life!
Hopefully, any of these five methods that Boyd & Gwen explains in their book will inspire more LCGS members to either write a brief history (aka vignette) on one of their favorite relatives or ancestors or even write a family history book beyond obtaining only their BMD info! This class will be recorded and the video will be included on our secure member only webpage!
