Program Description
Genealogists collect everything, from photos, documents, research notes, DNA results, correspondence to digital files scattered across computers, cloud accounts, and way too many thumb drives. But without a plan, even the most valuable family history research materials can quickly become hard to find, use, or pass on. In this practical, genealogy-focused session, archivist and educator Vicki Tobias introduces personal archives management strategies designed with family historians in mind.

Participants will learn how to organize and preserve both physical and digital research materials, make thoughtful decisions about what to keep, and create systems that support ongoing research rather than slow it down. The presentation also addresses long-term access and legacy planning, and how to ensure your research, family stories, and collections remain understandable and usable for future generations. Whether you’re just starting your genealogy journey or have decades of research behind you, this session offers realistic, archivist-approved approaches to managing your personal archives with confidence.

Speaker Profile

Speaker Vicki Tobias

Vicki Tobias is an archivist, historian, and educator with a passion for making the past accessible and meaningful. She earned a BA in History from the University of Nebraska and moved to Wisconsin in 1999 to complete a master’s degree in Library Science with a focus on archives management. Since then, she’s held roles across libraries, archives, and museums—as an archivist, digital services librarian, project manager, and more—building expertise in archival practice, digital stewardship, and cultural heritage preservation.

Vicki currently teaches graduate courses at UW–Madison’s School, where she loves mentoring future archivists and librarians. She also coordinates Recollection Wisconsin’s graduate student internship program which pairs library school students with local history organizations and libraries to digitize and share archival collections as part of Wisconsin’s Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) hub. In addition, she runs her own genealogy, history research, and archives consulting business, helping individuals and organizations explore and share their histories. When not working, she enjoys genealogy and local history research (of course), hiking, biking, live music, musical theater, and singing in a community choir. She lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her partner, Bob, and their delightful dog, Lucy.
