Program Description

This presentation reconstructs the life and career of Thomas Richmond Marshall, whose journey reflects the westward movement of both people and railroads in nineteenth-century America. Born in New England, Marshall served as a Union soldier during the Civil War and was wounded at the Battle of Battle of Chickamauga. After the war he entered the rapidly expanding railroad industry, beginning in Ohio in the 1870s and later Illinois before continuing westward to Iowa. There he became the first station agent in Wyoming, Iowa, a position he held for 28 years as the railroad helped shape the development of the town and the surrounding region. Marshall’s career is reconstructed through a combination of historical records and rare family materials, including original drawings, documents, and artifacts preserved by his great-granddaughter Kay Saelens of Loveland, Colorado.
