November Program: The Grand Army of the Republic

Starting in June, our society started meeting in person at the Fort Collins Senior Center for our monthly programs. We hold a hybrid meeting using our Zoom video service. Capacity is 45 persons in the Foxtail II room located at the northeast end of the senior center. Lots of free parking at the senior center close to the Foxtail room. We look forward to seeing you there!

Our program begins at 6:30 pm. Visitors (not LCGS members) who wish to attend via Zoom need to register below to receive the Zoom info and handout.

President Glenn York provides a brief overview of our society with the latest committee reports followed by tonight’s program.

Program Information:  The Grand Army of the Republic

The Grand Army of the Republic was the first successful nationwide organization for our military veterans. The GAR was a patriotic organization based on fraternity, charity, loyalty and provided opportunities for camaraderie, assistance with disability applications and other services. The GAR began with one post of twelve members and expanded to over 400,000 members and 7,000 posts by 1890.

Speaker Profile:

Lyn Devers Iannuzzi is the fifth generation to call Fort Collins and northern Colorado home. She attended K-12 beginning with old #10 Mountain View elementary and graduating in the first class at Poudre High. Her career path led to California where she retired as an aerospace Director of Accounting. Returning home to Colorado was always the goal, and her days quickly filled with historical projects. Lyn received the 2020 Fort Collins Historical Society Recognition Award for the Mountain Home Cemetery project. The project provided a detailed cemetery report, over 1,000 document images and transcripts to the Fort Collins Parks Department and the Archive at Fort Collins Museum of Discovery.
