Program Information:  Becoming an American: Naturalization

Since the founding of the United States, naturalization has been the way that immigrants became Americans. For most genealogists finding their ancestors’ naturalization records is a major goal. Not only do these records memorialize an important transition in an ancestor’s life, from being a citizen of a foreign country to becoming an American, but they can also be a source of important genealogical information such as the date and place an immigrant arrived in the U.S, names of other family members who accompanied him and even birth and marriage dates. To help genealogists in their quest for naturalization records, this presentation focuses on the process of naturalization (which varied over time) as well as the differences in naturalization faced by women, children and immigrants from non-European countries. The final section of the presentation will offer strategies and tools to help find sometimes elusive naturalization records.

Presenter Profile

Carol Stetser

Carol Stetser is an avid genealogist whose love for genealogy is a natural outgrowth of her background in English and history.  She has served in various capacities, including vice president and recording secretary, for several Colorado genealogical societies.  In addition to researching her own family, Carol presently volunteers as the researcher for Larimer County Genealogical Society to help out-of-area researchers access local records, as well as volunteers for one-on-one genealogy help sessions at the local library.  As a former teacher, Carol enjoys giving presentations on various aspects of genealogical research.
